The best light therapy devices for acne

This is where a lot of red light marketing quietly overreaches. The antibacterial effect that helps acne comes from blue light around 415nm, not from red. A red-and-near-infrared mask may help inflammation, but if a device has no blue mode it is not an acne device, and we say so rather than padding the list.

What we ranked on

  • •Blue light around 415nm, which is what the acne evidence rests on
  • •FDA clearance for acne specifically where claimed
  • •Honest labelling when a device is red-only
630nm · 850nm240 LEDFDA registered
Brand claim40.8mw/cm2

Registered is not cleared. BON CHARGE lists this as an FDA registered device and carries the standard no-disease disclaimer, so treat the marketing more cautiously than with the cleared masks.

  • Deeper 850nm near-infrared
  • Zero flicker and zero EMF claims

The acne sibling of the Contour Face. Buy it for breakouts, not for lines, because there is no near-infrared in this one at all.

Shark's own spec sheet lists blue as 630nm, which is a typo, an independent LED device designer measured it at 415nm. Peak draw is 35W with 16.92W in normal operation.

  • Under-eye puffiness
  • Red, blue and near-infrared in one device

FDA cleared under K230042 for wrinkles and acne. Qure is one of the few brands that prints its 510(k) number, which counts for something, but the missing irradiance spec still leaves a gap.

  • Most wavelengths in one mask
  • App-controlled custom programs

Emitter count is not dose. Without a published mW/cm2 you cannot tell whether 648 lights beats a 132 LED mask that states 30 mW/cm2.

  • Highest LED count
  • Short 3 to 9 minute sessions

A light bulb rather than a panel, and priced accordingly. Worth listing because its measured output sits unusually close to the brand's own figure, which is rare at any price.

The most internally contradictory product page we have catalogued. Four incompatible wavelength claims on one page means no buyer can know what they are getting.
